In 2021, there were 39,023 reported cases of STIs/HIV among youth ages 13-24 in Colorado. In fact, Colorado has the highest rate of syphilis cases in the US!

As explained by experts, part of the reason why these STIs cases are increasing is because many people, youth particularly, were not aware of their status and thus could not access treatment and share their status with their partner(s) to limit transmission.

Why You Should Protect Yourself

The most common STI symptom is no symptom! Yet, not all STIs go away on their own without treatment, and if an STI is left untreated for a long period of time, it can cause fertility issues and serious health complications.

Having any type of sexual activity inevitably exposes you to STIs. But you can reduce your chances of contracting one and continue to enjoy your spicy times by doing the following: wearing an internal or external condom, especially if you don’t know your partner’s status, and regularly checking your STI status.
